Elmer Cravalho was an American politician who served as the Mayor of Maui from 1969 to 1979 and as the lieutenant governor of Hawaii from 1979 to 1986. He was the first Native Hawaiian to hold these positions. Cravalho was known for his advocacy for environmental protection and preservation of Hawaiian culture. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Hawaii State Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, which helped to provide land for Native Hawaiians to live on. After leaving public office, Cravalho worked as a consultant and continued to be involved in various community organizations. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 90.
